When I turned 70 last year, I felt my legacy was set. I will continue to contribute in many ways over the next 30 years. At the same time, I recognize that when I asked the first question that created the international best seller Our Bodies, Ourselves (now in 31 language or format editions) – a book and an organization that altered the global conversation about women’s reproductive health and sexuality– I initiated what would become a sufficient and satisfactory legacy. We have ensured that girls and women around the world will have accurate health and sexuality information long after all us founders have moved on.
In reflecting on the 44 years since I asked that first question (“What’s in this birth control pill?”) and offered the first workshop (“Control of Their Bodies” at the first women’s conference in Boston in 1969), I have identified seven steps. These steps are supported by seven Cs: challenges, addressed by competence, confidence, conversation, collaboration, commitment and courage. The seven steps and the seven Cs allow you move from your burning question to creating the paradigm shift that alters the global conversation that you are passionate about. My critical experience and that of my founding partners in producing the landmark book Our Bodies, Ourselves has only been strengthened and become more refined through my years of business coaching and culture change over the past 4 decades.
I am now designing a transformative global conversation about the equality of women in real terms e.g. economic, influence, status, in the work place and the larger culture. I am passionate about women (and men) being conscious and active in developing the systems perspectives that will allow us all to bring our whole selves to the whole of our lives. My question now is: what will it take to bring our whole selves to the whole of our lives while making the difference we want in the world?
