In today’s high-stakes educational environment where the Test reigns King, our model is an education for information, where knowledge is quantifiable and what counts matters most. Even in the world of mainstream psychology, where we should be studying the soul’s meaning (the logos of the psyche), the Test is still King and quantitative research the gold standard, its crown jewels. I will discuss a qualitatively different model of education, what I call “an education for individuation,” showcasing how the psychology program at Pacifica Graduate Institute fosters such an education by using the very principles and practices within the branch of psychology known as depth psychology. Then, I will share some anecdotes to illustrate how this model works with elementary and high school students as well.
What is the format of this topic?
Where have you brought this to life before?
I have developed some of this material before audiences at Pacifica Graduate Institute. I've also co-edited two books--"Reimagining Education: Essays on Reviving the Soul of Learning" and "The Soul Does Not Specialize: Revaluing the Humanities and the Polyvalent Imagination--which contain essays I've written that dance around this subject. In addition, I presented at an international conference for the Institute of Elemental Ethics and Education, and had the paper published in the yearbook.
Do you have the presentation on slideshare, haikudeck or prezi?
Any chance you have this on youtube or vimeo?
What do you feel is the heartbeat of your topic?
James Hillman wrote in the book "The Soul's Code: In Search of Character and Calling" that "we dull our lives by the way we conceive them." To twist this, I would say we have dulled our educational system by the way we have conceived it. The heartbeat of the topic is the desire to revivify education and thus awaken the slumbering, depressed souls of our nation. I am interested obviously in being involved with the tribe of educators, but truly, many aspects of this model can be used in business, in leadership, in family life, etc.
How could the community collaborate with you to build your vision?
I have a fantasy of starting a high school based upon an education for individuation. Having taught high school for 16 years before becoming a university professor, part of my heart still remains there, and I know from experience what a difference this approach to education can make.
